BIG HERO 6

TYPE: ANIMAITION

COMPANY: WALT DISNEY ANIMATION STUDIOS

YEAR: 2014

ROLE: MATTE PAINTING / SET EXTENSION

When I joined Disney Animation for Big Hero 6, it was an exciting opportunity to launch a brand new set extension team within the look development department. Previously all matte paintings had been created by the Visual Development team in combination with a lighting TD to implement them into the shots. The new Set Extension team would be taking over that role by combining both the artistry of beautifully painted backgrounds, and tech savvy techniques, 3d modeling, lighting and stereo projection compositing. Since this first set extension experiment, the department has grown and is now a department of it’s own at Disney Animation Studios.

The police station sequence was my first one at Disney and on the film. In liu of any official training, I was instead tasked with learning the department workflows for layout, lighting, modeling and lookdev. I used this sequence as my on the job training to learn about all the proprietary tools, and utilized as many workflows and tools as possible for developing a set extension workflow. I did some layout of the background sets and props, full modeling of building and complete lookdev on the screen right hero building. Additionally I used this shot as my first official “set extension” where I modeled, matte painted and projected the buildings in the establishing shot (appearing in gray).

These warehouse shots called for some art directed skies in the background.

These flying shots were the last ones I got to work on before going on maternity leave. I’m so glad I hung in there and love how the whole sequence turned out. We really wanted to capture the magical golden hour with the iconic fog banks rolling in.
