MRS. DAVIS

TYPE: TV EPISODIC

COMPANY: POWERHOUSE VFX

YEAR: 2023

ROLE: MATTE PAINTING SUPERVISOR

Working on Mrs. Davis was an exciting balance of leading a strong DMP team as well as tackling some hero shots from the series to economize some challenging sequences.

I approached these piano field shots as a sequence style matte painting. I choose a hero shot to use for the master setup, and created a painting and projection setup that could be used for all the camera moves that roughly faced the same direction. Rows of wheat were painted in layers so it would parallax nicely through the crane shot movement. Pianos were a combination of cg pre-rendered turntables placed in the projection setup and dmp pianos scattered throughout. The piano turntables gave us control over the rotation and placement of specific pianos for extra variety and control all while keeping creative choices inside of the nuke projection setup.

These inside the belly of the whale shots also utilized a combination of digital matte painting and cg elements. I worked on the painted backdrops and projections, as well as some of the glass scratches and wear. Lighting created passes of atmosphere, distortions, bubbles as well as the props floating in the water for the final look.
