DR. WHO | THE DEVILS CHORD

TYPE: TV EPISODIC

COMPANY: WINDMILL LANE

YEAR: 2024

ROLE: MATTE PAINTING LEAD

My first painting for Dr. Who was of an aerial destroyed post apocalyptic London that I created during the show’s pre-production stage (pictured below center). This painting was created as an extra long looping sequence that could be projected live on a screen on set during production.

The other 2 apocolyptic paintings came after filming had wrapped. I created several concepts that incorporated different views of the above painting to establish a destroyed but identifiable landscape with London landmarks. These elements were all projected onto custom 3d geometry in nuke to accommodate the subtle parallax needed for the push in camera move.

For the Abbey Road paintings, I got to reference the famous Beetles Abbey Road painting. I created a hero painting and projection setup that could be used in a sequence workflow and made dmp lighting adjustments for the sunset/wet version.

The rooftop sequence was created again in a sequence style setup and workflow. I got to embrace my inner
Mary Poppins inspiration for a rooftop sequence that felt less modern and keeping with the style of the sequence. I had to work ahead of camera tracking, so I choose a couple hero shots that would cover the other shots and setup projections that could be imported into each individual shots. Multiple skies were created to match the skies in the plate and blend in seamlessly. Comp then had to dial each shot in to match specific color variations in each shot
